Abstract:: This collection contains records of the relief work of Martha (Dickie) Sharp (1905-1999) and Waitstill Sharp (1902-1983), European delegates of the Unitarian Service Committee (USC) in Czechoslovakia, France, Portugal, and Israel before, during, and after WWII. The bulk concern their humanitarian efforts between 1939 and 1944; their assistance to refugees after the war (1944–1950); and Martha Sharp's postwar life, including her campaign for Congress, her involvement in interfaith efforts to bring Jewish refugee children to Israel, her assistance to charitable organizations, and her service on the board of and in fundraising for the Zionist women's organization Hadassah (1948–1999). The date range for the collection is 1905-2005 with the bulk dated between 1939-1999.

Formal title:: John Brooks Sherman (Class of 1962) collection relating to the Vietnam War

Abstract:: John Brooks Sherman (1940-1966), (Brown, Class of 1962) was a pilot during the Vietnam War with the Marine All Weather Fighter Squadron 235 attached to Marine Aircraft Group 11 at Da Nang, Vietnam. He was shot down during a bombing flight on March 25, 1966. This collection contains Sherman's utility knife and wrist watch which were recovered from his body by Vietnamese soldier Nguyen Ý Chí. These personal items were returned to the United States in 2016 after many years of investigation to locate Sherman's body. This collection also contains documentation about the investigation to locate Sherman's crash site, repatriate his remains, and locate any surviving relatives.

Abstract:: The Henry Knox Thatcher papers consist of an oil painting of the U.S.S. Constellation, military memorabilia, and three journals and logs kept by Thatcher while on board several ships, including the U.S.S. Brandywine (1839-1841) and the U.S.S. Constellation (1862-1863). The journals reflect ship life, diversions on shore, the social and political climate of his time, and the duties of American ships in the Mediterranean during the early years of the Civil War.

The Womxn Project

Abstract:: The Womxn Project is a non-profit organization in Rhode Island focused on building a strong, feminist, community-based movement to further human rights of Rhode Islanders by using art and activism to advance education and social change. The Womxn Project stirs social awareness and invites political action to inclusively further womxn's rights through creative advocacy campaigns and collaborative art projects. This collection contains records and items that were created to advocate for the passing of the Reproductive Privacy Act in 2019. Materials include canvassing packets, memorabilia, handmaid's costumes worn at lobbying events at the Rhode Island Statehouse, community petition quilt squares, the community petition quilt, and petition scrolls that predated the quilt. Materials date from 1980-2021, though the bulk of the collection dates from 2017-2019.

Tillinghast Papers

Abstract:: The Tillinghast family business records consist of correspondence, accounting records, ships' papers and business books documenting the maritime trade and other commercial activities of Providence sea captain and merchant, Joseph Tillinghast (1734 – 1816) and his son, William E. Tillinghast (1777-1817). The records also include documentation for the firm Gorton & Tillinghast, founded by Joseph Tillinghast and William E. Tillinghast with Benjamin E. Gorton (1765-1822). Other business ventures include real estate investments and involvement with the Potowomut Mill.
